2BR02B

In the short story 2BR02B by Kurt Vonnegut Jr., the future is portrayed as a perfect Utopian world. The world that the people lived in was long lived, and people were able to live for as long as they want, and the population was maintained at a certain number. Wehling was becoming a father of 3 children, but instead of being happy, he was worried. He had to find 3 volunteers in order for his children to live because the population has to be stabilized at 40 million. It would be unfair for the newborns to die just because the father was unable to find 3 volunteers. The babies are helpless and their fate is decided by their parents, and that is unfair. One should be in charge of their life, and babies, are humans too, they should have the opportunity to live life.

There is no such thing as a utopian society. The world works in a cycle and if technology is used to perfect the world, the cycle would be disrupted. Longevity can not exist or else the world would over populate and there will be no meaning to life if life doesn't have an ending. We must know the positive and negative side of something in order for us to cherish the better one. For example, we must know what death is for us to love life. We must know what sadness is to know what happiness feels like. Too much of something, may result negatively. The use of technology in this story was too much, that only messed up the whole cycle of death and life and it creates inequality for Mr. Wehlings, his wife, his children, and his father. The father ended up volunteering and losing his life for his grand children. The newborns would've been dead if the father hadn't kill himself and the two medical doctors.

The definition of human is to live happily but in 2BR02B, the parents were worried about their children's lives. If you're able to live forever, you're not considered to be human, you would be considered as immortal. Life has it's ups and downs, and that's something we need to learn to accept. It's part of living life. We need to experience two sides of something in order to differentiate which one is better for us. The people in 2BR02B are living life without a meaning, they have no limits and they just live for nothing.
